Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral violence is a major challenge in democratic societies, particularly in countries like Nigeria, where elections are often accompanied by conflict and disruption. The role of security agencies in preventing electoral violence is crucial to ensuring peaceful elections. In Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State, the presence of security agencies such as the police, military, and other law enforcement bodies has been pivotal in maintaining peace during elections. However, despite these efforts, electoral violence persists. This study examines the effectiveness of security agencies in preventing electoral violence and their challenges in Jalingo.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While security agencies play a central role in curbing electoral violence, there are challenges such as inadequate training, insufficient resources, and sometimes political bias, which compromise their effectiveness. In Jalingo, instances of violence during elections have raised concerns about the capacity of security agencies to maintain order and protect voters. This study seeks to evaluate the role of these agencies and the impact of their interventions in preventing electoral violence.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Security agencies play a significant role in preventing electoral violence in Jalingo.
  2. Challenges related to resource allocation and training limit the effectiveness of security agencies in preventing violence.
  3. Enhanced collaboration between security agencies and the local community can reduce electoral violence.

1.6 Significance of the Study
